Beat the Heat: Keep Your Pooch Cool During Walks

Walking your dog in hot weather demands careful attention to prevent overheating and ensure their comfort and safety.

Here are some helpful tips to keep your dog cool during walks:

Walk During Cooler Times of the Day

Opt for early morning or late evening walks when the temperatures are cooler. Avoid walking during peak heat times, usually between 10 AM and 4 PM.

Hydrate

Make sure your dog has access to fresh, cool water before, during, and after the walk. You can carry a portable dog water bottle or a collapsible bowl.

Choose Shaded Routes

Walk on routes with plenty of shade to protect your dog from direct sunlight. Trees, buildings, and parks can provide much-needed relief from the sun.

Use Cooling Gear

Consider investing in cooling vests or bandanas for your dog. These items can be soaked in water to keep your pet cool through evaporative cooling.

Test the Pavement

Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5-7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Opt for grassy or shaded areas instead.

Keep Walks Short

Reduce the length of walks on hot days to prevent overheating. It's better to take several short walks than one long walk in extreme heat.

Monitor for Signs of Overheating

Watch for signs of heatstroke, including heavy panting, drooling, difficulty breathing, weakness, and an elevated heart rate. If you notice these signs, end the walk immediately and cool your dog down.

8. **Apply Sunscreen**: Dogs, especially those with short coats and light skin, can get sunburned. Use a pet-safe sunscreen on exposed areas like the ears and nose.

9. **Wet Their Fur**: Before heading out, you can lightly wet your dog’s fur with cool water to help keep them cool. Avoid cold water, as it can cause temperature shock.

10. **Gradually Acclimate to Heat**: If your dog isn't used to the heat, gradually acclimate them by increasing walk durations slowly over time as they adjust to higher temperatures.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that your dog remains comfortable and safe during their walks in hot weather. Always prioritize your dog's well-being and adjust your routines as needed based on the weather conditions.
