Abandoned Kittens: What You Need to Know and Do
Share
Spring is a popular time for cat mating so if you live in an area with a high stray/feral cat population you may find yourself chosen by a pregnant momma to be the person to help her care for her new litter.
Although cats are extremely resourceful and have natural instincts for how to keep themselves and their babies hidden from danger, you can assist them with these live saving steps.
Steps to Take if You Find Abandoned Kittens
1. Observe: Ensure the mother is not returning. Check from a distance for a few hours.
2. Warmth: Keep the kittens warm, use a blanket or a box (cat shelter) with a heating pad on low.
3. Safety: Place the kittens in a secure, quiet space away from pets and kids.
4. Feeding: Use kitten milk replacer, not regular cow’s milk. Bottle-feed every 2-3 hours.
5. Stimulation: Gently rub their genital area with a soft, warm cloth to help them urinate/defecate.
6. Veterinary Care: Contact a vet to check for health issues and get further guidance.
7. Find Help: Reach out to local rescues or shelters for additional support.
Taking immediate action can be a life saving decision!
